Chris was my best friend growing up since 4th grade and as you already know was to be my best man at my wedding next year. Sandy and I were looking forward to meeting you and spending time with Chris. Upon hearing the news of his death I became deeply saddened and feel a void in my life. He was such an inspiration to me, his family, you and everyone whose lives were fortunate enough to have him be there. I've never known anybody as gracious, open-minded and modest as Chris. He was generous during my visits to New York, treating me to dinner and offering for me to stay with him on my first visit since his move to the city. Chris and I shared a passion for sports and fitness. He constantly challenged me to push my limits often times racing me on foot, bike, roller-blades and cross-country skis, of course he would always win. I couldn't compete with the best athlete I've never known, but it was his humility that made him shine through all his personal success athletically, academically, socially and in his career. He was a great mentor for his younger siblings and set the bar very high for them; his shoes just seem just too big to fit. The Shaffers, it seems, are in constant competition with each other and try to become what Chris had turned out to be, which was being the best in everything he did. ~ David Harvey
