Patrick Shaffer's Remembrance

Why it was so great to have chris as a big brother: Having Chris as my big brother is probably the highlight of my life. So many memories now where I don’t really remember the details of what happened, I just remember that I shared that moment with him. An example: swim meet when I was probably 10 or 11, I don’t remember the race I did, but I vividly remember him coming up to me after and seeing on his face that I made him proud. I can feel his hands on my head and I can hear his voice and see his smile. My entire life he was devoted to making me a man. He would never let me doubt myself, and he never doubted himself. And it’s true that there was almost nothing he couldn’t do. I remember one summer vacation when we decided to try surfing. Chris picked it up immediately. Like everything else it just came naturally to him. It wasn’t this way for me, and I began to suspect that maybe I just wasn’t going to get it down. But he wouldn’t let me believe this. I don’t actually remember now whether I picked it up or not, but I do remember that he made me realize that I hadn’t actually given it my best shot. I think there are some things you have to learn by example and the example he set was so brilliant. “don’t make excuses for yourself” only sticks if you can see the person who never makes excuses for himself, Chris was that person. There are so many moments in my life when Chris provided me with enough inspiration to last me a lifetime. My deepest regret now is that I can’t provide him with the lifetime of devotion that he earned.
